Traditional X-ray involves the use of a radioactive source such as Cobalt or Iridium to expose a piece of film which can be processed to reveal an image of any inclusions. RADAR imaging uses sound waves to determine the placement of inclusions.
This is really dependant on what the client is interested in finding. RADAR imaging works exceptionally well on almost every concrete structure but performs poorly where there is excessive steel or porous material. X-ray works well on most concrete structures but it requires adequate access to both sides of the slab and a cleared area due to the radiation. RADAR Imaging can be performed at any time of the day or night because it does not pose a hazardous threat. X-Ray is typically done at night due to the hazardous nature of radiation which demands the areas to be cleared of people.
X- ray can provide an image that looks like the ones provided by your doctor. Usually conduits can be clearly made out but rebar and Post Tension are not easily distinguishable. The images provided by X-ray will occassionally be inaccurate or will shift slightly depending on the setup the x-ray crew uses. RADAR imaging can provide an extremely accurate location of every inclusion in the concrete but distinguishing between different inclusions can be difficult if not impossible on some jobs. It is our policy to find our clients a location free of any inclusions as close to the area the client requests as possible. This may mean moving a hole a few inches in one direction or another to avoid everything in the concrete.
An approximate depth can be determined immediately while scanning the concrete, but a more accurate depth can be determined if we are able to calibrate the RADAR equipment off of a known elements depth in the concrete.
It has always been our policy to not charge a client if we cannot help them. We pride ourselves in trying to give our clients the most accurate information possible so we will never tell our clients it's safe to core if we cannot get a usable signal.
As noted in our proposal Baldwin Radar Imaging has always stood behind its work and guarantees its scans to be accurate unless our technician has noted that we cannot guarantee the scans on the job order sheet. We also cannot guarantee Slab on Grade due to various factors. Our policy is if we do a scan for your firm and we cannot guarantee it and your firm decides to get the area x-rayed just let us know and we will waive the cost for our service. We want all of our clients to be safe and happy with our service and we don't expect you to pay for evaluating your concrete twice.
Although this is rare it can still happen through equipment malfunction, user error or some other unforseen circumstance. When damage does occur one of our project managers will visit the site and evaluate the area in question. If our client has stayed within our boundaries, not cut into our lines, and we did not write no guarantee on the job sheet we will, as noted in our proposal, pay for the damage. Unlike many of the firms that have started up over the last few years we don't avoid our client, disappear, or say it's not our responsibility. We stand behind our work and always will.
We can normally meet our clients needs the same day, but we would appreciate at least two days notice if possible. Also, any job requiring a flight will be dependent on the airlines, but can typically be done within two days.
RADAR imaging isn't just something we do on the side in addition to our primary service--it's our primary service. Unlike companies that have many different services, such as, engineering companies whose focus is on engineering, coring companies whose focus is on coring, electrical companies whoes focus is on electrical, and plumbing companies whoes focus is on plumbing we do one thing, RADAR imaging. For the past eleven years we have strived to always be the best. By not having multiple services this allows each employee to become intimately familiar with providing the best RADAR imaging service possible.
When Baldwin Radar Imaging originally started there were no other RADAR firms in the southeast doing indoor RADAR scans so its billing was patterned after those the x-ray firms used where they charged by the piece of film. The 2'x2' area was selected because it provided an adequate size to evaluate an area for a core penetration and also allowed for additional cores if required. Over the years we have seen firms which charge hourly come and go because on the surface hourly seems less expensive, but that's only if the technician is quick. By the time the jobs were completed the cost for hourly rates greatly outweighed the per scan cost. Baldwin Radar Imaging wants the client to know exactly how much a job will cost prior to our arrival regardless of how long it takes us to complete a job. If it takes our firm eight hours to do one scan it will be the same as if it took one hour. The per scan pricing allows for Xenogenesis to be upfront and consistent with our clients and this pricing has helped make bidding a project that requires RADAR imaging to run smoothly. Our pricing is as simple, our client has to determine the number of cores the project requires and multiply that number by our per scan cost which has changed very little over the years. Keeping it simple means the client doesnt have to make a call everytime they need to bid a project, which saves valuable time for the client.
We believe we offer a quality service that is more accurate and reliable than the firms that operate out of their garage or have other primary focuses. We can also provide a technician for RADAR imaging usually on a moments notice and we stand behind our work and don't disappear the moment an incident occurs. We will always try to match our competitors prices, but we have found that most of the time the service a client receives is directly proportional to the cost of the service and we will never reduce quality just to reduce price.
Baldwin Radar Imaging carries professional liability because what we do is offer our "professional interpretation" of the data provided by our equipment similar to an engineering firm or surveying firm. General liability does not cover "professional interpretation" and was added to our policy even though it is not required by any of our clients. The reason we do this is because the clients do not know that general liability will not cover incidents which may happen but we feel it is our duty to protect our clients. Most of our competitors do not take this additional step and leave the client uncovered. Fortunately, since our inception Baldwin Radar Imaging has never had to make a claim because of our high standard of work.
Baldwin Radar Imaging works all over the country and when a job is in an area outside of our normal area we work we will still charge the same price with the addition minimal travel costs. We are not trying to make any income off of travel so if a hotel stay is required we charge actual cost, if an airline flight is required we charge actual cost, and if a drive is required we charge the standard government rate for mileage and per diem if necessary. Even with these minimal travel fees typically we are still more affordable than the local RADAR firm. In addition if your job is of sufficient size and scope we typically will waive all of the travel fees.
The RADAR equipment cannot penetrate metal, such as, metal deck. The equipment has difficulties when standing water is present so the area really needs to be dry prior to evaluating. We have also encountered issues with terra cotta tiles, heavy duty reinforced floors that use tiny wires to reinforce, and porous concrete. As noted above if we cannot provide the information the client requires we do not charge for our services-this includes any jobs that require travel as well.
The depths vary greatly depending on the type of material being evaluated (soil/concrete) but typically we can see up to 3 to 4 feet deep depending on conditions.
Typically we will need very basic information and this can be submitted on our contact form. We will need your company name, company contact, contact phone number, location of the job site, floor level, estimated number of penetrations, when we need to arrive, site contact, site contact phone number, and a PO number if your company requires one.
Our corporate office is located in Atlanta, Georgia, but we have technicians in surrounding cities such as, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Charlotte, Greenville, Columbia, Augusta, Savannah, Jacksonville, Birmingham, Mobile, and Nashville on various days during the week. Atlanta, Charlotte, and Birmingham are our hubs for service so most jobs can be done within a day from the time it is scheduled. We can also travel anywhere within the country on short notice as well as Puerto Rico.
If we arrive at your site and we cannot help you due to poor signal, excessive steel, or some other unforeseen circumstance it has always been Xenogenesis policy to not charge our client for the visit. This includes travel cost as well regardless of where the project is at. We are confident in our ability to locate post tension, rebar, and conduits and do not feel that a client should have to pay for our service if we are not able to help them.
