In many cases, a hole needs to be cored inside a wall. In these cases, We will remove the wall track in one location and scan both sides of the wall. Then through the section removed. In this example, we found that the beam stopped just at the edge of the wall, and no steel was running parallel inside the wall. We did locate a run of electrical conduits that ran right through the third section of the wall. This was also the main location that was set to be cored with 4 cores. They just relocated the cores to the second and fourth sections and were able to avoid the electrical conduits all together. This was billed as 3 scans and came out to be about 1/15 of the price of hitting the conduits. In the long run, it is always cheaper to scan.

Ground Penetrating RADAR has no issues with tile or granite surfaces them selfs. The only issues that can arise with these kinds of flooring or walls are if a super fine wire mesh mat (1/2 inch by 1/2 inch)is used inside the grout layer. This can insulate the top of the floor from the GPR or X-ray signals. However, if the slab is elevated then it can be scanned from the underside. This will show the technician the contents of the slab up to the wire mesh mat layer that is under the tiles. Wire mesh that is embedded in the slab such as what was used in the example image (6 inches by 6 inches) is not a problem for an experienced technician.

With GPR we can evaluate the contents of block walls. This can be very important for prisons as the concrete masonry units themselves are easy to chip through or break, but the high PSI concrete poured inside is next to impossible to chip through so it is very critical that every cell is filled. This is also important in buildings such as data centers with a gas-pressurized fire suppression system. In these types of buildings if a large area of voids are found this could lead to a blow out of the structure wall. Finding voids can be done very quickly making it possible to examine large sections of the wall in a very short amount of time.

This is an example of GPR Scanning Concrete Blocks. In applications such as prisons, it is very important to ensure that the high PSI concrete does not have any cells with voids. The high PSI concrete is much stronger than the concrete block and can not be chipped away as easily. Another application that is common to have the cells checked for voids is Data Centers or other facilities that use a waterless fire suppression system this can pressurize the room causing blowouts if some of the concrete blocks were not filled correctly. Having GPR scan concrete blocks for quality control can stop other issues that might show up down the line.

This was a GPR concrete scanning job we did at 2525 Desales Ave, Chattanooga.
It is a very clear example of why you scan. On the image to the left, the core would have been 1/4 - 1/2 inch into an electrical conduit. GPR concrete scanning will save you time, money, and headaches.

GPR Scanning was used here to inspect the steel after the concrete was poured. This ended up being enough to allow the project to obtain it's CO. Without GPR scanning this would not have been possible.

Ground Penetrating RADAR (GPR) Can be used on almost any surface or even a change in surfaces.

GPR concrete scanning works just fine on elevated slabs that use metal pan. We can even mark out the high/low pattern at the client's requested.

GPR scanning in most construction applications ranges from 100 Mhz to 5 Ghz. A similar rage to that of walky-talkies and cell phones. GPR scanning does use dedicated bands that stop it from causing any interference.

Concrete xray requires access to both sides of the slab, unlike GPR scanns which just needs access to one side. Making slab on grade scans impossible for concrete xray
